Points of Interest:
Baha’i Temple
Completed in 1961 – world’s 4th Baha’i House of Worship to be built. Regarded as among 4 most significant religious buildings constructed in Sydney last century. Ground floor is a main auditorium with seating for 600, encircled by a gallery – from there 9 doors open onto the grounds at equal angles signifying the unity of the world’s religions.
Ingleside & Powderworks Rd
One Carl von Bieren built a gunpowder and lead shot factory between 1884-86 (incomplete), with finance from a company floated in 1884. He named his manor house ‘Ingleside’. The Governor and State Premier attended a grand banquet he held towards the end of the construction of the buildings. He got into financial difficulties and fled to London, where he was arrested and sentenced to over 2 years for fraudulent insolvency.
Caleyi Track
Named for the rare and endangered Grevillea caleyi, which grows in a restricted area in this locality (including grounds of the Baha’i Temple).
Jack Black Airfield
Old Boral sand quarry remediated by members of Warringah Radio Control Society from 1977 onwards. Members fly their model planes and helicopters at the airfield, named for one of their members.
Five Mile Creek Movie Sets
ABC film series 1983-85 used outdoor movie sets for depicting a harbour, a homestead, and a mining village. The sets were facades and were removed when sites were relinquished. The harbour set depicting fictional ‘Port Nelson’ was located above the current airfield. The series gave its name to Five Mile Creek that flows into Deep Creek.
Moon Rock
Declared an Aboriginal Place in 2016 – traditional owners Eora people. Some of best preserved engravings around Sydney. Central engraving depicts Baiame (creator god & sky father). Others depict phases of the moon, whales, stingrays, dugongs & a series of mundoes (footprints). Walkers are requested to remove boots around the site as a mark of respect.
German Rock Carvings
Deep Creek Reserve had a picnic site/leisure camp created by the German Labour Front in 1934 and used by visiting German sailors from merchant ships, up to the outbreak of war. There are rock engravings of ship’s names, German place names, dates and insignia.
Plethora of Tracks
First the horses and walkers, now the mountain bikes.
