Circuit of North Head from Manly Wharf. Walk to Shelley Beach (footpaths) then around the headland (tracks) with views north and east at formed lookouts. Continue South on a track past three unfenced lookouts with optional exposure to gain views. A metal walkway passes a swamp in the old quarry (nice place to stop for morning tea) and then through heathland past gun emplacements from WW2 and continue to Barracks Precinct with old military buildings and parade ground. Track continues along the coast over Handing swamp (pathway can be flooded). Take a side trip up towards the command centre and see the magnificent grass trees. Return to the track and follow the memorial pathway to North Fort (refreshments and toilets available). Follow the metal pathway past the Third Quarantine Cemetery, two harbour lookouts and the Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub. Detour to the Quarantine Station (1 hour tours can be pre booked). Take the track beside the Quarantine Station Wall from North Head Scenic Drive to Collins Flat Road. Return to Manly via Collins Flat Beach and Little Manly Point. Lots of short ups and downs, some footpaths, rough tracks, metal walkway over wet areas, lookouts and wildflowers, historical buildings and infrastructure.
